I found this Louisiana Waterthrush about 2 weeks ago while my husband and I were taking a walk on the trail near our house. As we walked along the creek, I heard really loud and melodious song. At first I was not able to tell who was singing. It took a while to spot this bird because of its concealing plumage. Finally I spotted it and figured out it was a Louisiana Waterthrush. What was funny was it was actually singing on the dead log hanging over the creek right in front of us.
I saw the first Summer Tanager of this season in our back yard on Apr 24th. I took these photos on the 25th.
I am pretty sure that this male is the same one that we had in our backyard before, not only because he comes to the feeder without any hesitation but also he sings exactly the same way he did last year.
I think this nest was really clean compared the ones we has last year; we had three broods last year and the last one's nest was really messy! It took a while to clean the nest box completely.
I know it is really nasty, but wanted to show the nest from last year just for comparison. You can tell how clean this year's nest was.
I took this video last evening around 7pm. Chicks were really active at this point already, and at least one was almost trying to get out the nest. I saw them still in the nest this morning, but when I came back, I found that the nest was empty. I heard little chicks calling somewhere around our house.
